In 1966, The Greater Phoenix, Arizona Chapter No. 98, NAWIC, published an
8-1/2 x 11 inch plastic covered book bravely called the Construction Dictionary©.
The book had 154 pages, 3,000 definitions, and a spiral binding that "relaxed"
when exposed to the heat inside a pickup truck.
Western Construction Magazine, in an August, 1966 editorial, said,
"Somebody has finally got off the dime and put together a dictionary of
construction terms". The article goes on to say, "The source of the
new Construction
Dictionary© is a bit unexpected. It was not published by a long established
trade or technical group...(but by) Chapter 98 of Women in Construction in
Phoenix".
That first edition is now a collector's item.
The Construction Dictionary© grew in popularity and in content. With
each new edition, thousand of new words, definitions, and specialty terms
were added.
Sales of the third edition exceeded all expectations resulting in funding
a Construction Department Scholarship Program at Arizona State University,
with in excess of $75,00 going to make the fund self-sustaining. A like amount
of money was distributed to various NAWIC projects, including the organization's
National Education Foundation, the NAWIC Founder's Scholarship Fund, the Greater
Phoenix Chapter's Endowment Scholarship Fund, and other educational efforts
of the organization.
With the seventh edition, slang terms common to the various trades in the
industry were added. Again, sales of the Construction
Dictionary© met with unexpected success.
Forty years and nine editions later, the Construction
Dictionary© is preparing for the release of the tenth edition early 2007.
Proceeds from the sale of the Construction Dictionary© are directed
to educational scholarships for women who are enrolled in construction
and construction-related programs in Arizona thus giving way to the logo
